Two separate questions
A rental shop’s insurance is not your travel insurance.
Confirm what third-party insurance applies to the actual vehicle, then separately verify that your travel or medical policy covers you as the rider. One does not automatically replace the other.
Current UK travel advice states that driving without third-party insurance is illegal in Vietnam and tells travellers to ensure their policy covers the planned activity.
Ask before payment
Get the important answers in writing.
Ask what the vehicle policy covers, what excess or exclusions apply, and what happens after an accident. Ask your own insurer about engine capacity, licence validity, passengers, helmet rules and medical evacuation.
- “Is riding a motorcycle or scooter covered at all, or only as a passenger?”
- “Is there an engine-size ceiling — 50 cc, 125 cc — and what happens above it?”
- “Am I covered if my licence or permit turns out not to be valid in Vietnam?”
- “Are pillion passengers, night riding and unpaved roads included?”
- “Does the policy pay for medical evacuation, and to where?”
The exclusion that voids everything
Most policies collapse if the riding itself was not legal.
The most common failure is not a missing add-on — it is an insurer declining a claim because the rider had no valid entitlement for the vehicle class, no helmet, or alcohol involved. Those clauses sit in the general exclusions, not in the motorcycle section, which is why reading only the activity list is not enough.
This is also why the licence check comes before the insurance check: cover that assumes legal riding cannot be bought back after the fact.
Do not rely on assumptions
Payment and insurance solve different questions.
Paying the full rental online through Vroomad does not replace liability or medical coverage. Keep the rental agreement, photo report and insurer contacts accessible throughout the rental.

Useful questions
Answers before the request.
Is travel insurance enough for a rented scooter?+
Not necessarily. Verify both the vehicle’s local third-party position and your own policy’s riding, medical and licence conditions.
Does the online rental payment include insurance?+
Payment and insurance are separate questions. Ask for the applicable vehicle policy and verify your own riding and medical cover before confirming.
Is third-party insurance legally required in Vietnam?+
Current UK travel advice states that driving without third-party insurance is illegal in Vietnam. Ask what policy applies to the actual vehicle before riding.
What evidence should I keep?+
Keep the booking, rental terms, vehicle photos, partner details and written insurer confirmation available during the rental.
