At handover
Make the partner show every control you will use.
Locate both brakes, indicators, horn, lights, ignition, steering lock, fuel cap and storage release. Adjust mirrors while stationary and reject a helmet that is damaged or does not fit securely.

The first ten minutes
Choose a calm start instead of proving confidence in traffic.
Practise smooth braking and low-speed turns away from a major junction. Avoid a first ride during heavy rain, at night or in peak traffic if the city’s road behaviour is unfamiliar.
When it rains
The first minutes of rain are the most dangerous ones.
In the rainy season a downpour arrives fast, and the first minutes lift oil off the asphalt before washing it away. Painted road markings, metal covers and tiled crossings turn slick immediately — brake earlier, corner upright, and if visibility collapses, stop under cover like everyone around you does.
Flooded corners hide kerbs and potholes. If locals are detouring around a stretch of water, follow them rather than testing its depth.
Parked is not finished
Use the steering lock and the guarded parking the city runs on.
Saigon parks its scooters in attended lots — the gửi xe with a ticket — outside markets, malls and many cafés. Use them rather than an unattended pavement, lock the steering, take the key, and do not leave the helmet hanging on a mirror overnight.

Current official travel advice describes motorbike accidents as common, requires a helmet and warns against riding without the correct documents and insurance. Vietnam also applies strict drink-driving rules, so the safe plan is simple: do not drink and ride.

Is HCMC suitable for a first-ever scooter ride?+
Dense and unfamiliar traffic creates significant risk. If you are not already an experienced rider, choose other transport rather than learning in central HCMC.
